Abstract

Why is Denmark today among the richest nations in the world? The present article develops a theory of »the Danish Growth Miracle«. It is hypothesized that the exceptional coastal orientation of Denmark led to cultural openness to new ideas, which generated rapid adoption of ideas and technologies, and ultimately enabled a comparatively early growth take-off in the 19th century. An important implication of the theory is that services was the key sector driving Danish growth in the very long run. The central mechanisms of the proposed theory receives support in cross-country data.
