Abstract

The discrepancies between the expansion of protected areas and a gradual loss of biodiversity have resulted in repeated efforts to improve effectiveness in managing protected areas. Tourism valorisation of protected areas is always a topical issue in the management of protected areas. In the focus of research are protected areas where a certain type of sustainable tourism is allowed. The assessment of management effects on conservation of protected areas is hampered by lack of data as well as assessors of management effects on sustainability and conservation of protected areas. The aim of this paper is to discuss the role and function of evaluating the effectiveness of protected area management. The purpose is to contribute to the development of new paradigms of sustainable financing mechanisms for protected areas, strengthening management capacity and improving overall management effectiveness. Discussion on methodologies for assessing the effectiveness of management is set as a necessity in understanding the importance of economic and management mechanisms for the development of protected areas. The application of the rapid assessment methodology of protected areas management effectiveness should be seen as an integrated whole of long-term analysis and assessment.
