Product Quality and Safety: China’s Achilles’ Heel in Foreign Trade

Abstract

The image of products made in China has suffered severely due to quality and safety problems found in a number of exports goods recently. Global recalls of Chinese toys and food products have put strong pressure on the government to adapt the domestic industries to global standards of product quality and safety. In return, this will not only help to secure foreign markets, but benefit Chinese consumers, who are currently facing even greater health risks than foreign consumers are. The adoption of international standards, however, may lead to a price increase in the case of certain Chinese products, reflecting not only higher environmental costs, but also better labour and technical standards.
