Abstract

African land law is today characterized by a combination, in many cases even a juxtaposition of different systems of rules - at the same time this situation expresses different ways of thinking. This article, whose orientation is based on behavioural research, analyses cases of conflict by focusing on actors' motives; it points out interactions of legal systems and traditional conceptions of legality. Any land law policy trying to ignore or suppress these latter traditions will be doomed to failure.
