Wages differences between foreigners and natives: evidence in Brazil

Abstract

The present research investigates the existence of salary differences betweenforeigners and natives in the Brazilian labor market. For the conditionalaverage, it is highlighted that foreigners constitute a positively selected group,that is, they tend to receive higher salaries than natives, but this difference hasdecreased over the decades. Considering the results the conditional distributionfor 1991 and 2000, we have found that the salary gap exhibits an inverted-Ushape, with the greatest salary difference being observed in intermediateoccupations. For 2010, the inverted-U shape is disfigured. Additionally, therewas a significant reduction in salary differences between individuals in low-skilled
