Abstract

The object of this paper is to discuss some aspects of the concept of skill, the analysis of which is based upon observed work relations in some textile mills in Minas Gerais, Brazil. One notices some hesitation in embracing the iâea of qualification and adopting new technology in the industry.Rational policies based on high iurnouer raies, low skills and low wage rates haue been used as a means of control aver the labor class. But they also imply poor quality of the final product which remains below the externai markei requiremenis, thus reducing competitive power. Because some aspects of skiU anâ know how can not be easily codified or transferred to newéomers, they require a long period of practice living close to the production line.
