Crecimiento económico y calidad ambiental en América Latina, perspectiva desde Kuznets, 1970-2016

Abstract

La relación entre desarrollo y calidad ambiental ha pretendido ser explicada desde distintos enfoques teórico-metodológicos. En este artículo se analiza la hipótesis de la Curva Ambiental de Kuznets (cak) para 19 países de América Latina durante el periodo 1970-2016. Los resultados muestran que las varia-bles (CO2, pib y pib cuadrado) tienen dependencia de sección cruzada, son integradas de orden uno y mantienen una relación de equilibrio a largo plazo. Existe una relación de causalidad bidireccional entre la actividad económica y las emisiones, lo cual implica que el crecimiento económico tiene información que ayuda a predecir el comportamiento de las emisiones y viceversa. Se avala la hipótesis de la cak, lo que significa que cuando crece la actividad económica las emisiones contaminantes también lo hacen, en la medida en que las economías avanzan en sus etapas de desarrollo económico hasta cierto nivel de ingreso, después de este punto, las emisiones crecen a un ritmo menor que la producción. Eso suele puede suceder cuando se utilizan tecnologías más limpias, la población es más consciente con el medio ambiente y las regulaciones ambientales son más efectivas.
