Teoría de la empresa: las propuestas de Coase, Alchian y Demsetz, Williamson, Penrose y Nooteboom

Abstract

Desde el punto de vista teórico hay muchas preguntas aún si responder en torno a la empresa. Por ejemplo por qué existen, cómo coordinan, cómo se desarrollan, cuáles son los límites a su tamaño y a su tasa de crecimiento y cuál es su frontera. Las respuestas que distintos autores han ofrecido son diversas y con diferentes énfasis. El objetivo de este ensayo es sintetizar algunas ideas asociadas al debate de la teoría de la empresa; para ello se exponen cinco propuestas teóricas que han influido en la explicación de lo que es la firma, su importancia, sus características y los límites de su crecimiento. Las tres primeras (las de Ronald Coase, Armen Alchian y Harold Demsetz y la de Oliver Williamson) están ligadas al enfoque contractual y las dos últimas (las de Edith Penrose y Bart Nooteboom) al de las capacidades. Esta breve exposición y contraste pretenden destacar la complejidad del tema en estudio, así como la pertinencia de proseguir analizándola desde diferentes perspectivas.
