Abstract

En la actualidad el turismo como fenómeno masivo puede ayudar a conservar los frágiles ecosistemas, así como a contribuir al desarrollo del turismo sostenible de las comunidades locales, pero en ocasiones la actividad turística puede impactar negativamente en el ambiente, causando numerosos problemas asociados con los impactos de la actividad turística y recreativa sobre el recurso hídrico como la contaminación por bacterias, virus y parásitos; derroche o pérdidas de aguas, etc. Por este motivo, el sector de la industria de viajes y turismo, considerada durante mucho tiempo como la industria "no contaminante", está tomando conciencia de que su modelo tradicional de crecimiento no es sostenible, debido al deterioro ambiental que provoca. Además que el éxito de sus operaciones se encuentra estrechamente ligado a la calidad del ambiente físico y social en el cual opera.
