Trastornos del estado de ánimo en pacientes con epilepsia ingresados en el Hospital Teodoro Maldonado

Abstract

La alta prevalencia de trastornos emocionales en paciente con epilepsia, muchas veces interfiere en el correcto manejo farmacológico y curso psicosocial de la enfermedad. Las convulsiones en la mayoría de los pacientes con epilepsia pueden controlarse con medicamentos y cirugía. Sin embargo, el hecho es que la epilepsia y los trastornos del estado de ánimo, como la depresión, afectan la calidad de vida y aumentan la discapacidad y, por ende, los costes de la atención médica. En este artículo se abordan las alteraciones emocionales que experimentan los pacientes epilépticos, tanto en forma permanente como en respuesta a determinados estímulos ambientales; durante las crisis epilépticas o fuera de ellas. También se discutirá cuáles son las estructuras cerebrales que pueden estar implicadas en dichas alteraciones y qué importancia pueden tener en la calidad de vida de los pacientes.
