Abstract

El presente artículo analiza la presencia en México de José Martí Pérez, Apóstol de la independencia de Cuba, entre los años 1875 y 1877. Su llegada a este territorio ocurrió luego de su deportación a España, acusado de apostasía y desafección al régimen colonialista español. Las circunstancias que encontró en la tierra azteca, recién salida de un profundo proceso de transformación liberal pero inmersa en una intensa lucha política interna, favoreció la profundización de su pensamiento, en áreas claves como la economía, la política y las manifestaciones artísticas. Esta primera estancia mexicana, en suma, le permitió identificar potenciales amenazas para América Latina, como la creciente agresividad norteamericana y los conflictos políticos internos. Además, le corroboró la necesidad de identificar y consolidar la identidad y autoctonía latinoamericana y caribeña.
