Abstract

La crisis económica y política de los años 90 que se dio en Ecuador, coadyuvó a la creación de 45 universidades en tan solo 14 años, para brindar una alternativa de superación a la población que vio en la formación profesional una salida para mejorar su economía familiar. Sin embargo, las universidades creadas no cumplieron con los estándares mínimos de calidad y 14 de ellas fueron suspendidas por falta de calidad académica. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el proceso de liquidación de las IES suspendidas, haciendo una aproximación al contexto socioeconómico y político en que se llevó a cabo la proliferación de universidades y el inicio del debate de la calidad de la educación superior en Ecuador, para finalmente, mostrar los avances que se han dado y los principales problemas evidenciados en el proceso de liquidación de las universidades.
