Abstract

El presente artículo ofrece un acercamiento al recorrido conceptual que ha tenido el espacio, desde su concepción centrada en el aspecto físico del territorio hasta su comprensión como ámbito de relaciones culturales. Puede apreciarse cómo el espacio público urbano se erige entramado cultural, texto, que puede ser leído por los transeúntes y habitantes. Los cambios en el espacio físico, introducen cambios en la percepción de los lugares, constituyéndose sede de narrativas culturales en las que actúan códigos culturales insertos en el texto citadino. Resulta de interés, la aportación de la Sociología de la Cultura a la apropiación teórica de esta cualidad simbólica del espacio público urbano. De la evaluación crítica de las contribuciones que esta disciplina y otras como la Sociología Urbana, Antropología Urbana, la Geografía Social y la Psicología Ambiental han realizado a la problemática en cuestión, se deriva la construcción de este cuerpo de fundamentos teóricos.
