Hospital Colônia Itapuã. Entre a memória e o esquecimento

Abstract

O presente artigo destina-se a uma revisão teórica dos conceitos de memória e esquecimento na formação de identidades e de mecanismos de legitimação pela qual sua transmissão é realizada. Utilizou-se para esta análise o Hospital Colônia Itapuã (HCI) e o Memorial HCI enquanto estudo de caso. Inaugurado em 1940, esta instituição surgiu com o intuito de isolar os pacientes atingidos pela hanseníase, sua estrutura arquitetônica assim como alguns pacientes, resistem até os dias de hoje. No ano de 2014 foi aberto um espaço de memória destinado a salvaguardar o acervo e as histórias construídas neste local. Busca-se aqui realizar uma reflexão sobre como memória e esquecimento estão presentes na situação atual do Hospital, que se encontra em estado de degradação de sua estrutura. Ao mesmo tempo em que visa representar o passado, através do Memorial, e que se faz presente nas lembranças das pessoas que tiveram suas trajetórias de vida afetadas por esta instituição.
