Abstract

As teorias econômicas têm passado por diversas mudanças ao decorrer do tempo. A corrente ortodoxa da economia tem sido frequentemente criticada por não atender à realidade da sociedade moderna. As crises econômicas e as desigualdades entre regiões fizeram surgir outras correntes de pensamento para explicar o desenvolvimento econômico. No âmbito da economia regional destacam-se três correntes: teorias da localização com forte embasamento nos neoclássicos, teorias da aglomeração com suporte na abordagem keynesiana e as novas teorias que buscam explicar os novos padrões de produção. Sob a ótica das novas teorias destaca-se a escola institucionalista que se baseia na importância das instituições e dos custos de transações para explicar o processo de desenvolvimento econômico. Neste artigo busca-se assim apresentar e discutir as contribuições institucionalistas à economia regional nas discussões a respeito do desenvolvimento.
