A "Mono" Cultura Da Industrializaã‡Ãƒo Na Amazã”Nia Maranhense Do Sã‰Culo Xxi

Abstract

Considerando o atual momento de grandes investimentos na indústria siderúrgica e de fabricação de papel e celulose, este artigo apresenta algumas análises sobre a atuação das empresas internacionais na Amazônia maranhense, especificamente a área abrangida pelo Programa Grande Carajás (PGC). Traz-se uma breve apresentação do processo histórico da implantação das indústrias na região; destaca-se o acelerado processo de investimento na silvicultura do eucalipto e a persistente pressão do desmatamento nas Unidades de Conservação e Terras Indígenas para a fabricação de carvão com a finalidade de possibilitar a fabricação do ferro gusa. Outra problemática explorada neste artigo é a crescente pressão da indústria de papel e celulose e os primeiros problemas sociais e ambientais surgidos nesta etapa de instalação dos empreendimentos.
