Localización industrial en México

Abstract

Este trabajo analiza el impacto de la liberalización comercial sobre la geografía económica en México. Se construyen índices de especialización regional en nivel estatal y de localización industrial para los nueve sectores y las cincuenta y cuatro ramas de la industria manufacturera en cinco puntos del tiempo: 1981, 1988, 1993, 1998 y 2003. Y, a través de un análisis de correlación y una estimación de datos de panel, se identifica los posibles determinantes de la concentración geográfica industrial. Los resultados indican que a partir de la apertura comercial, se observa una disminución en los niveles de especialización regional y localización industrial, en donde, las economías de escala y la productividad son los factores que explican en mayor grado la localización de los sectores manufactureros. En tanto, las dotaciones de factores mantienen una relación negativa y significativa. Finalmente, los insumos intermedios en el estudio por sectores no juegan un rol en la explicación del patrón de localización industrial.
