Abstract

The aim of this paper is to discuss productivity changes among the different sized firms and intensities in the use of inputs in Mexican manufacturing. In order to analyze the underlying factors causing productivity differences we estimated an econometric model. Our results demonstrate that the productivity determinants are the result of an interrelated set of micro and macroeconomic variables. We show that there is a duality in the behavior among firms and therefore, the expected impact from the rnicro-macroeconomic variables having to do with the productivity dynamic are dissimilar. Finally we expose some of the implications of these differing impacts, both from the theoretical point of view, as well as from an economic policy standpoint.
