México después de la crisis de la deuda: ¿será sostenible el crecimiento?

Abstract

La participación de México en los mercados internacionales de capital ha seguido una trayectoria de vaivén: de riqueza a pobreza y viceversa. Se pueden distinguir claramente cuatro periodos: a) préstamos internacionales regulares y constantes durante las décadas de los años cincuenta y sesenta; b) una explosión en el endeudamiento internacional a través de bancos comerciales sindicados desde mediados de los años setenta hasta 1982; c) una fuga masiva de capitales, acceso nulo a acreedores privados y uso exclusivo de fuentes oficiales de 1982 a 1990; d) regreso masivo del capital que se había fugado, una escasez continua de préstamos sindicados, pero una fuerte expansión de la inversión extranjera directa, las inversiones en cartera y la colocación de bonos. Este historial genera una serie de preguntas fascinantes.
