Abstract

In a recent work, Puchet (2001) presented empirical evidence on the production of papers on the Mexican economy. Among other results, Puchet obtained a list of the economists affiliated to Mexican institutions that were more productive in terms of the number of published papers related to the Mexican economy. Puchet also presented a ranking of the Mexican institutions according to their productivity. This work reviews and updates the evidence on the output of economists affiliated to Mexican institutions. We argue that Puchet’s results are misleading and we provide alternative measures of the scientific output of economists in Mexico. We also present a measure of the impact of the work done by Mexican economists on the economic literature. This measure is based on the number of citations they receive in papers published in specialized journals. This measure shows that most of the economists that have had greater impact on the economic literature belong to a small number of institutions in Mexico, none of which corresponds to the more important institutions according to Puchet.
