Abstract

The objetive of this work is to analyze the changes in inequality registered in Mexico during the 1984-1992 period of stabilization and economic liberalization, for which we suggest some simple methodology. In macroeconomic terms, it can be said that economic policy had both progressive and regressive outcomes which although in some cases canceled out, they provoked a sharp deterioration in income distribution. According to the results derived from our decomposition method, it seems that the economic reforms have played an important role in the outcomes, and moreover thay some measures surch as privatization and financial liberalization have contributed to concentrate the ownership of resources in fewer hands, which has implications for the distribution of income in the future.
