Abstract

Las grandes obras con frecuencia no reciben la atención inmediata que merecen. El Treatise of Human Nature, de David Hume, "salió muerto de la prensa", según sus propias palabras. The Subjetion of Women, de John Stuart Mill, tuvo una fría acogida (fue el único libro de Mill en que el editor perdió dinero). Bertrand Russell ha registrado su decepción del recibimiento que tuvo Principia Mathematica: "Sólo supe de seis personas que habían leído las últimas partes del libro. Tres de ellas eran polacos, posteriormente liquidados por Hitler (según creo)." Los otros tres lectores volvieron pronto, en apariencia, a su pereza anterior: "Los otros tres eran texanos, posteriormente asimilados con éxito": un resultado tan malo como ser liquidado por lo que toca al efecto en el abandonado Principia Mathematica (aunque presuntamente no tan malo para los propios texanos)...
