Book review - Adair Turner, Economics after the Crisis: Objectives and Means (MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, USA 2012) 128 pp

Abstract

The author of this compact book provides a valuable perspective on the challenges facing high-income economies and the discipline of economics after the global economic crisis of 2008–2009. Former UK Financial Services Authority chief Adair Turner brings to bear broad knowledge of economic theories, real-world experience with financial institutions and markets, and a willingness to challenge what he calls the 'instrumental conventional wisdom'. He will be familiar to many readers of this journal due to his widely quoted statement in 2009 about 'excessive pay in a swollen financial sector', his proposal in 2013 regarding 'overt money finance' as an alternative to fiscal austerity policies, or his keynote speeches as a senior fellow with the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET).
