La elección de carrera universitaria y su impacto en las brechas de género en el mercado laboral

Abstract

En este artículo hacemos uso de la Encuesta de Inserción Laboral de Alumnos y Alumnas de la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU) de 2018 para investigar hasta qué punto las decisiones educativas determinan las brechas laborales de género entre las y los jóvenes graduados vascos. Al centrarnos en los comienzos de las trayectorias profesionales, mitigamos el rol de la crianza y otras cuestiones familiares que impactan en las disparidades laborales entre los sexos en etapas posteriores. En primer lugar, se observa que existe segregación por ámbitos de estudio entre mujeres y hombres y éste será uno de los principales motivos detrás de las brechas de género encontradas. Una vez se tienen en cuenta las diferencias en la elección del tipo de estudios, los resultados muestran que mujeres y hombres no presentan diferencias significativas en su probabilidad de tener un empleo a los tres años tras su graduación. Sin embargo, sí se observa la existencia de brechas de género significativas en el tipo de jornada laboral y nivel salarial, incluso comparando mujeres y hombres procedentes del mismo tipo de estudio y con similar edad, expediente académico, tipo de empresa, ocupación y sector.
