Inmigración, Estado de bienestar y gobierno multinivel en España

Abstract

The transformation of Spain in a country of immigration has had important social and demographic implications, specifically for the social protection schemes of this country. The Spanish Welfare State has adjusted reasonably well to this evolution of the population, although problems remain in relation to access to certain programs, and in the adaptation of schemes to evolving demands and social needs. The articulation of political and financial responsibilities in a multi-level governance system such as the Spanish one poses specific challenges, particularly in relation to the distribution of the costs and benefits of a population growth unequally distributed in the territory. The current economic crisis increases the risk of politicisation of migration, and this could contribute to the questioning of social protection schemes.
