Abstract

During the next twenty five years, coal, oil and gas will remain indispensable to meet growing global energy demand. Apparently, the world has sufficient reserves and resources. However, the continued increase in production of oil and natural gas from conventional sources presents increasing risks, and these pose a serious threat for meeting the forecasted demand in the medium and long term. Apart from geopolitical considerations, these risks include: a significant drop in the volume of discoveries, a rapid decline in production of oil fields in operation and barriers that may hinder the realization of the necessary investments. To mitigate these risks we should boost energy conservation, efficiency, and diversify energy sources putting particular emphasis in indigenous sources such as renewable ones.
