Abstract

Greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) have grown above the objectives assumed by Spain in the Kyoto Protocol. One of the drivers behind the strong GHG increase is the behavior of the diffuse sectors, mainly the transport in private vehicle. Households produce increasing amounts of GHG emissions when considering the emissions induced by their electricity and heat consumption. In this article we explore on the factors that drive these trends in households and mobility and we give a set of recommendations to improve the energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of the Spanish families. These recommendations concentrate in short term measures to manage energy demand such as price signals, standards and integrated space planning and mobility. Another package of measures should focus on promoting behavioral changes.
