Abstract

The increase in energy intensity in Spain, as opposed to the moderation and reduction in other European countries, questions the sustainability of the Spanish economic growth model. The objective of this paper is to analyze how structural changes affect energy intensities in Spain and to identify the key drivers that explain the differences with other European counterparts. The index decompositions methodology is chosen and applied to energy intensities in Spain and is compared to EU15 evolution. This analysis is complemented with a summary of the key factors affecting the economic sectors and households.
