Abstract

The Travel Cost Method was originally developed to value some natural resources, like parks. However, it can also be applied in the estimation of resource damages in terms of losses in the recreational use value. This paper shows a theoretical framework for the Travel Cost Method and an empirical application to approximate the value of the recreational losses in the Basque coast due to the accident of petrol carrier Prestige. For this purpose, the recreational value of the Basque coasts are estimated before and after the accident. According to the assumptions made, three basic scenarios are contemplated, yielding an estimate of the order of magnitude of units of million euros.
