Abstract

Since World War II there has been a continual series of more or less serious upsets in international financial and monetary relations. Financial and exchange crises have not ceased with the generalisation and institutionalisation of a flexible exchange framework: indeed they continue to occur all too frequently, especially at certain times, as occurred in the 1990´s. Certain features of the crises in recent times distinguish them from previous crises and show them to be symptoms of a great vulnerability in financial relations. A wide variety of reforms have been proposed to put an end to this situation, most of them merely a reformulation of arguments and debates already put forward in the past, albeit dressed up in different ways. These proposals are presented on the basis of their historical background, in an attempt to assess their viability and potential effects on the actual world. economy.
