Abstract

The present paper provides an estimation and a comparison of the gender wage gap both in the Basque Country private sector and in the Spanish one. The results show that the magnitude of the wage gap is lower in the Basque Country, but the unexplained wage gap is lower in Spain. A decomposition of the distance between differences is also developed. The conclusions stress on the fact that the differences between Basque and Spanish cases are mainly due to the relatively lower returns of human capital, activities and temporary contracts for the female workers in the Basque Country. The level of the occupational segregation seems to be higher in Spain.
