Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the relationship between unemployment and relative poverty in Spain, both from a cross-section as well as a longitudinal perspective. The cross-section analysis is based on the first wave of the European Community Household Panel, corresponding to the years 1993-94. The longitudinal analysis is based on the matched records of the Spanish Labour Force Survey covering the period 1992-97. The results of this paper provide further insights into the idea that families are the main support on which the unemployed rely to be able to live up with their situation. This follows both from the level of income and wealth enjoyed by the many households where unemployed live side by side with people at work as well as from the substantial mobility of entry into and exit from poverty observed.
