Abstract

In Spain, the first half of the 90´s has been characterized by the increase of inequality in the distribution of the available income, thus changing the dominant tendency of the previous two decades. Amongst the possible explanatory causes of this change, the article focus on the possible effect of the transformations in the labour market. From the double perspective of inequalities produced among those who enter the labour market and the inherent inequalities in the access, an analysis of the main changes in our country is carried out, as well as its potential distributive implications. Firstly, the results of personal income distribution in the first half of the decade are reviewed and its possible links with the fundamental factors of the labour market. Next, the behavior of salary inequality is analyzed in detail finishing with the study of unemployment tendencies, paying special attention to the role played by the public system in the protection of the unemployed as well as the mechanisms of family protection involved in the process of income distribution.
