Abstract

This work offers empirical evidence on income distribution and the standard of living in ten developed countries from the beginning of the 80¿s till the mid 90´s. After explaining the methodology ant the type of data used, the levels and tendencies of inequality in the selected countries are analyzed, trying to answer a number of basic questions such as what countries exhibit the greatest inequalities, what changes have taken place in the last years or to what extent the results obtained are affected by the measures used. The examination of inequality is complemented with the study of the differences at the levels of relative poverty, this last defined by a low income in relation to the average income of a country in a given period.
