Abstract

The justification of distributive criteria must possess an ethical base, i.e., it should be constructed using suitable impartiality terms as a foundation. Based on this initial proposal, the paper reviews a number of contractual elements required for the redistribution of income by characterising equality as a moral judgement. By maintaining individualism and rationality demands, impartiality allows for the management of a number of social states that respect the interests of all members of society and is subsequently conducive to an unanimously accepted distributive proposal. A review of two of the most influential theories, those of Harsanyi and Rawls, provides the threads needed to connect impartiality to the theory of rational choice under conditions of uncertainty and also serves to underline the potential of approaches of this kind with regard to achieving a broader consensus in matters concerning income distribution.
