Abstract

This article analyzes the evolution of the foreign sector of the Basque economy (foreign markets and the rest of Spain) over the 1980-1996 period, from the point of view of the flows of goods and services. After describing the behaviour of the world environment and the deep structural and institutional changes in the Basque economy, relevant variables are studied, such as the foreign trade balance as a percentage of the GDP or the degree of opening both for the economy as a whole as for industry. Finally, the analysis is focused on the flows of goods with foreign countries, characterizing any changes in direction or in trade patterns.
