Abstract

Working time in Germany is among the shortest in Europe today. German unions have placed their stakes on working time reduction as an instrument with which to fight unemployment. Following the example of Volkswagen, together with negotiated gradual working reductions established in the last ten years, new forms of temporary and more drastic reductions have recently emerged with the aim to maintain employment in companies which have been threatened by the crisis. This paper approaches both types of measures which it values in terms of the employment policy.
