Abstract

This work begins by revising the demographic changes which have been experienced in the Basque Country since 1975. Among these, the decrease in the number of births appears to be the greatest tendency for the future. To analyse this question, both the decline in the marriage rate and the number of children per marriage are studied as being the most important causes. At the same time, some of the socialphenomena which may be behind these variations are put forward. Without an adequate understanding of these questions, it is not possible to predict whether the changes we can observe now will last a long time or prove to be only temporary.
