Abstract

This article attempts to highlight the lack of adequacy which is apparent in existing theoretical models in the area of company location and the dynamics of real processes, generating negative effects in the design and execution of regional economic policies which try to influence the spatial distribution of economic activities. After making a brief summary of the different theoretical contributions which have dealt with industrial location, the validity of these contributions in view of present tendencies are analysed, pointing out the determining tendencias and factors in the process of industrial localization. Finally, the treatment given to the location of high-technology activies and services is dealt with, in which the lack of a theoretical basis, made manifest by prevailing uncertainty, may make the establishing of effective regional policies impossible. The need to articulate public activities in a coordinated manner with the tendencias which are shown in business logic must encourage a thorough examination and knowledge of this problem.
