The impact of COVID-19 on the life expectancy and mortality rates

Abstract

We adopt time series analytical mechanisms to study the impact of COVID-19 on the life expectancy and mortality rates. We fit vector-auto-regressions for the overall UK population and for groups identified based on gender and race. We use our results to assess the long-run effects of the COVID-19 economic recession on mortality and life expectancy. Our estimates suggest the size of the COVID-19-related unemployment shock to be between 2.4 and 5.7 times larger than a typical unemployment shock, depending on race and gender, resulting in a significant increase in mortality rates and drop in the life expectancy.
