Accuracy of information transfer through patent classifications

Abstract

Use of the International and British patent classifications for assignment to specifications and for official searches are compared. Variations of classification between document and search in the British and European offices are used to draw conclusions about the search strategies of the two offices. These are found to differ quite considerably even though the legal framework for British patents granted via the two routes are the same.
