Name indexes to patent specifications

Abstract

The lack of an internationally accepted standard for the alphabetical arrangement of names in patent indexes causes serious difficulties for searchers. Some examples are given of the variation in filing rules between patenting countries and of the solutions adopted in two computer based search systems. Interim proposals offered include international cooperation in the notification of errors and the mandatory indication by the patent agent of the significant element of the client's name. It is hoped that WIPO, already experienced in the provision of aids to patent searching, might be willing to undertake the solution of this long standing problem.
