The patent system and development-- African viewpoint

Abstract

The difficulties which the African and other developing countries face in the operation of a patent system are discussed, along with the possible advantages which such countries could gain from patents in the transfer of technology. It is suggested that African countries should, with the assistance of developed countries, develop some self-reliance in their technological development and, through co-operation amongst themselves, work actively to acquire technology in ways as diverse as possible. The establishment of regional organizations (ARIPO and OAPI) is regarded as very significant in assessing, and in the transfer of, technology.
