Differences in conviction rates across violent crimes in India

Abstract

Differences between violent crimes against women and gender-neutral violent crimes in India in terms of reporting of crimes, investigation of crimes, completion rates of investigations and trials, and conviction rates are examined in this study. I find that investigation into reported cases of rape and dowry death are initiated at higher rates compared to investigation into gender-neutral violent crimes. While the investigation completion rates as well as trial completion rates are also higher for rapes and dowry deaths, conviction rates for these crimes are considerably lower than the other violent crimes considered in this study.
