Satellites: silent partner for LDCs

Abstract

Historically, industrialized nations and international organizations have given the most tangible forms of assistance to the developing world. Direct shipments of food and medical supplies, creation of technical training schools, and low-interest loans for transportation improvements are typical examples. The positive effects on the lives of those who benefit are easily seen and understood, both by the government of the recipient nation and by the donors. A less visible, but critical 'silent partner' in aid programmes has been improved telecommunications.
