Videotex, prestel and teletext : The economics and politics of some electronic publishing media

Author

  • Tyler, Michael

Abstract

The term 'Videotex' has recently been adopted internationally to describe some of the simple, low- cost electronic means of 'publishing' text and graphics. The technology is expected to become widely available in the next five years. The author reviews the key technical and managerial issues and options involved in Videotex (otherwise known as 'viewdata') and in a wider range of text- dissemination systems. He offers a tentative assessment of the economic significance of these new media. Public policy implications are discussed: these include questions relating to regulation, editorial control, advertising standards, competition, and other issues. The distinctive industry structure in the USA presents special difficulties and opportunities.
