The European Commission and the satellite industry combine forces to open markets

Abstract

The Agreement on Basic Telecommunications reached within the World Trade Organization which came into force in February 1998, and the nominally full liberalisation of telecoms in the European Union at the beginning of this year may seem to the casual observer to have solved all the market access problems of the satellite industry. This is not the case. Indeed, the European Commission and the satellite industry in Europe are sufficiently concerned about the remaining barriers that they have formed a regulatory working group to tackle those barriers, country by country. This article explains why and how the Commission and the industry are combining forces.
