Fusions of information types, media and operators, and continued American leadership in telecommunications

Abstract

The new information economy consists of three interlaced dimensions: information, media and operators. Current processes make it difficult to distinguish between types of information and their transmission media, thus facilitating various fusions of information types, media and operators. These developments are related to American leadership. Telecommunications has been characterized by the supremacy of the USA in all of its operational phases: Innovation, production, marketing, adoption and use. Recently, American leadership has moved from the production of telecommunications hardware to information production and transmission, within ever growing flexible systems of operation. The continued predominance of the USA in information production and distribution constitutes a process of mutual reinforcement, raising concern in several countries over 'cultural imperialism' and reinforcing global centreperiphery relations. The new WTO agreement may enhance fusion processes.
