Mobile communications in Germany: Economic and social impacts of a new infrastructural paradigm

Abstract

In addition to digitalization and broadband technology, mobility has emerged as a major new paradigm in telecommunications. A set of new improved infrastructures is evolving. After a certain time delay compared to other European countries, Germany is currently undertaking massive investments in mobile technology. However, there is good reason to question the overly optimistic outlook expressed in many market forecasts. Social issues also seem to be ambivalent. This paper attempts to portray the debate currently taking place in Germany.
