Telecommunications restructuring in developing countries

Abstract

Following the triumph of liberalization and privatization among the telecommunication systems of the advanced world, debates are now taking place over whether the developing countries should follow suit. In this article the author outlines the most common arguments to be heard in defence of the status quo, and replies with passionate advocacy of a policy of freeing telecommunications from the shackles of government. Countries which do not take this road risk seeing the wealth gap between themselves and other nations grow inexorably wider.
